When Ole Larsen from Shearing Shed Solutions inspected the shed belonging to John Guest from "Montalto" in Tumbarumba NSW, he found an old shed that had seen a lot of wear and tear. John was concerned that the timber slats were worn to the point where the gaps would soon become a hazard and the timber fences, gates and down chutes were in need of serious repair. Over the years the timber stumps had settled to the point that the floor dropped dramatically to one corner of the Pen Area.
It was decided that the shed itself was still in good condition and rather than opting for a new shed it just needed to have the shearing area upgraded. This would involve the replacement of the Pen Area flooring, removal of the existing timber stumps and the installation of a new set of internal gates and fences.
In August 2008, the existing floor was stripped and the timber stumps removed. The new steel posts allowed the floor joists to be re-levelled and a new hardwood slat floor was laid.
John had decided that a 3 Stand design with Front Fill Races and a Sloping Catch Pen Floor was the layout that best suited his requirements. The existing shed had ample width so there was plenty of room for the three new catch pens and down chutes plus the existing internal ramp for sheep stored under the Wool Floor.
The design also incorporated Sheeted Fences around the catch pens to give the sheep direct line of sight from the fill pens into the catch pens, thus making loading up easier. Finally, a new shearing wall, covering the full width of the shed was installed.
