When he wanted to update his portable shearing facility with something more permanent, Ron Gillard of "Lello Whytatah" at Cowra, NSW called Shearing Shed Solutions for ideas. He needed a shearing setup that gave him maximum capacity while still allowing him to use the remainder of the shed for machine and material storage.
To take into account the flow from the existing yards, it was decided that a two stand, raised board setup with a side access ramp would be the best option. Due to the shed having a concrete floor throughout, under floor height was an issue, but a solution was found so that down chutes and exit races could be installed.
Ron contacted his original shed supplier and arranged for a single bay to be enclosed and sliding doors to be fitted to the remaing bays. A new opening for the sheep Entry Ramp was also provided and with this done, Shearing Shed Solutions were able to begin the installation.
A two stand, raised board with Back Fill Pens and sloping catch pen floors was constructed. An internal entry ramp leading to a 1500mm wide race, provided acces to the catch pens. A series of swing and swing-slide gates were also fitted to direct sheep the either catch pen. Openings were cut into the rear wall below floor level to allow for sheep exit via the down chutes. The external wall of Catch Pen 1 was sheeted with plywood to isolate the sheep from any action on the wool floor. Finally a set of timber steps with a steel handrail was installed.
